PARLIAMENTARY

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

[By Teleoravu]

AVeu.ixuton, August 24

The Properties Assessment Act Amendment, and Beer Duties Bills, were read a second time last night. Air Reader Wood moved as an amendment that all the machinery used for mining and manufacture, agricultural implements, wearing apparel, books, etc., should be exempted, and that the clause be reduced from LSOO to L3OO, and the amount of duty reduced from Id to Ad ; also that the beer duty be reduced from Gd to 3d. The amendment was lost on a division. In Committee on the Bill a further effort will be made to carry tlie.se amendments.

Sir Geo. Grey delivered a long characteristic speech, in which he said that Air Wood’s amendment amounted to a vote of want of confidence, which was significant, he being a Government supporter. Alajor Atkinson announced that one-half of the subsidies payable to local bodies would be continued during the next nine months, and that the Local Rating Bill would be withdrawn.
