KAIKOURA.
j (From our Own Correspondent.) August 4th. There has been a change in the personnel of the Road Board since I last wrote to you. Messrs Ingles, Tenney, and Keene aie no longer members and the new men, as you will probably be surprised to ,learn, have altered everything over which they had any control, and amongst other tilings have taken their advertisements away from you, for which kindness I think you are partly indebted to an old friend from Blenheim, who is sometimes credited with dabbling in his neighbors’ affairs. He was in this part of tlie world lately, and it is thought fomented much of the ill feeling over the election contest. We put him down here as the author of the long-wind-ed and stupid rigmarole appearing in the columns of a contemporary and purporting to be a description of South Marlborough.. The action of the Road Board is by no means viewed with general favor here I can assure you. There is still some talk of a local paper being started here,- but so far I do not think anything definite has been doi.e. Here, as at most small places, there are two parties and their interests are not the same, so that it would require considerable tact to run a paper successfully. Difficult as tlie task would be, however, it is not impossible to accomplish it and I should not be surprised to find some enterprising individual going into the speculation. Some negotiation I believe has already taken place between, some of the sittlers here and a gentleman (in Blenheim long connected with the Press—a practical printer and a good “ all round ” mail —but as I have said, nothing definite has apparently been done. , < The proposed alteration of, the boundaries of the electoral districts of AYairau and Cheviot if carried out will place Kaikoura in the former, and it is just likely that in future elections the electors here in the event of a tight contest would turn the scale. I don’t think the majority of tlie residents here, however, approve of the proposed alteration.
■ t [By Telegraph.] At a meeting of tlie ratepayers for the | Rural Riding of Kaikoura, on Thursday, Mr R. Alldridgc was elected a member, of the Board without opposition. His liomina-' tors were Messrs W. Gibson and Dicken- i son.
