CORRESPONDENCE

To the Editor. Sir, —Can you inform me the reason t’ Education Board paid £IS for six desks for the Havelock School, when if tenders had been called, they would have been supplied for a little more than half the money, the

same as at Canvass Town. As one of the Havelock School Committee supplied these desks, if not contrary to the Act, it certainly looks queer, and is a waste of money. I am, etc., Havelock.

THE CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY, BLENHEIM. To the Editor. Sir, —I was at tlie Church meeting held last Monday week, and judging from the few people present, was surprised at |the want of interest taken in the matter by the congregation. In speaking of the estimated receipts and expenditure for the forth coining year, it was pithily remarked that it was impossible to pay £4OO with £330. Although times may be bad, I do not think it would be a very difficult thing to make up the sum required. In fine weather the church is usually very full on Sunday evening. and there is also a good attendance in the morning. I should think there is on each Sabbath day, about 250 people present, and if they were to give Oil a piece all round, it would realise £325 per annum. This sum, in connection with the pew rents —if paid punctually —would make up the amount required, and place financial affairs on a sound basis. Of course I speak under the supposition that the people will not allow their contribution to be diminished through non-attendance. Many members of the congregation can afford a much larger amount than the sum I have named, even if others cannot give so much. In conclusion, 1 think it is a great pity that the Church should remain closed from Sunday to Sunday. Many people would be glad to attend an evening service if held through the week. lam aware that our esteemed Incumbent has a huge district to look after, and cannot be here at all times, but there are several gentlemen who act as lay-read-ers, who would officiate, I doubt not, on such occasions. In Nelson there are evening celebrations of the Holy Communion held regularly, and I believe there are many people here who would attend them, who are prevented by circumstances from attending in the morning. Trusting you will excuse me for taking up so much of your time and attention, —lam, etc., OMEGA.
