LOWER WAIRAU RIVERS BOARD.

The Board met last evening. Present— Messrs C. Redwood (in the chair), Horne, Eyle, Parker, and Davies. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. mr Desmond’s contract. Mr Desmond, contractor for extra works on Mr M’lvor’s land, applied to the Board for LCO for works and compensation for loss consequent on the contract being broken. The Chairman moved that LSO be paid. Mr Eyles said he thought L4O would he a sufficient payment and proposed that the above sum he paid to Mr Desmond. Mr Parker seconded the motion, which was carried. Another item of Ll 7 for making a dam near Leary’s was also ordered to he paid to Mr Desmond. law expenses. Mr Gordon Allan sent in a little account of LG3 for professional services in connexion with recent matters in litigation in the Supreme Court. The Chairman said he understood from Mr Sinclair that the amount would be LOO. He thought the charge was excessive. It had been understood that Mr Travers’ fee for coming here would be L 45. Dr Horne moved that L 45 be paid to Mr Allan. This was seconded, put. and carried. REPAIRS TO RIVER BANK. Mr Eyles said he wished to bring under the notice of the Board the state of the river bank near the slaughterhouse. He thought the hank, which was being eaten away, might be saved by willowing and the work should he undertaken at once. Messrs Batty had offered to do the work at L 4 per chain. He thought if about 44 chains were done it would preserve the hank, and thought the work should be done immediately. The Chairman said he had visited the locality and thought the work was urgently required. The trustee of Budge’s estate was willing that willows should be taken for the purpose. On the motion of Mr Eyles, seconded by Mr Parker, it was agreed that the work should he done.

Mr Batty’s offer to repair a bank in the locality at LIS was agreed to. On the motion of Mr Davies, seconded by the Chairman, it was agreed that two extra men should be put on to clear willows from the Omaka river. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were ordered to paid :—Desmond £57, Sinclair £3O 14s, Barry £l3 10s, Newman £2 2s, Rogers and Co. £2O 0s Cd, C. Smart £8 2s Gd, J. Batty £3l Gs lOd, Edwards and Co. £l4 Us, D. McVean £4, G. Allan (barrister) £45, Jackson and VVelbry £l7 10s, Dobson £4 4s. COMPLAINT. Mr J. McCallnm complained of detriment to his property caused, by a hank, alleged to have been erected under the Board’s supervision, by Mr William Robinson, and requesting that the Inspector should he instructed to inspect the bank and rc-port thereon. The Board instructed the Inspector to inspect the locality and report to the Board. SPRING CREEK BOARD V. LOWER WAIRAU RIVER ROARD. Mr Sinclair, solicitor, forwarded to the Board a copy of an addition to the declaraton proposed by Mr Conolly in the above imatter so as to test the right of the Wairau Board to erect a dam at the plaee where it stood until cut away. Mr Sinclair stated that he saw no objection to the proposed addition, and pointed out that if the Board is willing, a special case can now be stated for the opinion of the Supreme Court as to the power of the Board erect the dam and cut the channel. Unless the Board consents to state such a case, the matter will have to stand ever until the next sitting of the Supreme Court here in December next.

It was agreed that the whole Board be a committee for taking Mr Sinclair is advice on the matter. AUDIT, ETC. Mr o‘Sullivau stated he had made arrangements to have the accounts audited next Monday, and was going on with the valuation. The Board then adjourned.
