UPPER WAIRAU GOLDFIELD.

We continue to hear favorable accounts of the prospects of this Field. Mr It. Jackson, whose letter was received on Tuesday lust, but too late for insertion in that day’s issue, says he has examined a number of gullies near Mount Patriarch, in the majority of which there are good indications, hut the working will be heavy and there is difficulty and also expense inseparable from the conveyance of stores and profitable working under such circumstances, so that none hut experienced miners should try their luck, at all events during the winter and early spring months. All the miners in his neighborhood are much indebted to Mr Williams, of Birch Hill, who his greatly assisted them in the matter of stores and in doing all he can to assist thfm in developing the resources of the locality. Mr Jackson gives it as his opinion, and he is an old West Coast miner who should he a judge in such matters, that there is every probability of this Field ultimately proving a payable one, but at present, although some good gold has been obtained there is nothing to warrant a “ rush,” and people at a distance had better wait until they receive fuller information before starting for this new Eldorado. In one gully, -which has been named “ Tipperary gully,” a pros-

pect of a penny weight to the dish has been obtained from the washing stuff, and for a distance of many miles the country gives indications that an average yield of not less could be obtained, and probably more, the creeks and terraces appearing to be goldbearing. Fox and party have obtained what they consider payable gold in sufficient quantity to warrant them in applying for a prospector’s claim, and in about a dozen different gullies visited by our correspondent the indications are more or less satisfactory. The gold, for the most part, is of a coarse, nuggetty character, and seems to he distributed over a considerable extent of uround.
