HAVELOCK.
[From Our Own Correspondent.]
July 13,
A parishioners’ meeting was held on Monday evening in St. Peter’s Church, Mr C. H. Mills in the chair, when Mr H. L. N. Clarke and Mr John Guinness were appointed Auditors, and it was resolved that the Chairman should write to the Rev. F. T. Opie requesting him, if possible, to attend the annual meeting to be held on Friday, July 23rd, or Monday, July 26th, for the election of Churchwardens and Vestrymen, and to bring what information ho may have respecting the proposed loan for concluding the purchase of the parsonage site.
It was pretty generally understood some weeks ago that a number of the unemployed, of whom so much has been lately said and written, would be put on the line of road between Havelock and Black Ball by the beach. This route was surveyed by the late Mr W. Pickering. Some five years ago this line was recommended to be adopted by the member for this district in the Provincial Council, Mr C. H. Mills, but deiay was occasioned by the departure of Mr Seymour for PTngland, and also in the belief that the Rai Valley Tramway was to be constructed. There is now some talk of the work being let by contract, and so long as the undertaking is carried out quickly we shall not be particular by whom it is done.
On Monday evening last the usual monthly meeting of the Havelock Board of Works was to have been held and several of the members put in an appearance at the school-room, as well as persons who had business to transact, hut they were obliged to take it coolly by waiting outside until 9 p.m., when the various disappointed parties took their departure to their several homes, The cause of this has been assigned to the fact of the sudden departure to Blenheim of the Clerk of the Board, who made his exit without letting anyone know of his intention. Speculations arc rife as to the fate of the Spec, it being a fortnight since she left Wellington for Havelock. [Since the above was written our correspondent telegraphs the arrival of the Spec and five other vessels, all of which had been blown to sea by the receut gale. Ed. M.T.]
