TO A FERN LEAFLET. Tiny remembrancer, what thoughts ye bring Of cool retreat where waters, dripping, fall From rock to rock, o’er leaves and fronds t hat cling With smiling sweetness to the cool damp wall ! Of woodland shades, of Songful dewy dhls, Thy fairy shape with voice betwitching tells. And thou another talc dost tell of one, Sweet as thyself, and radiant as the day ; Who smiled upon thee, smiled until the sun His shaded light, all-quivering, drew away, Till thou, bewitched, didn't joyous hail the maid, And, trembling, kissed the hand that plucked thee from the shade. Oft have I gazed into the starry eyes Which thus so sweetly did upon tliec shine ; Oft have I searched their glorious depths, where lies Love’s mirrored light; ofr, clasped that hand in mine. Whose warm thrill ye have felt. : oft trembled when Hope’s airy turrets towered, (o crumlo down again. A thousand happy scenes ye back recall : A thousand tender thoughts ye, mute, suggest; — Love’s fairy Holds, and fancy mixing all. Thoughts from the East, scenes from the •- glowing West, Stir the wild revel in my trobbing brain— A moment’s beat of joy ’mong droaiv days of pain. But oh! - sweet leaflet, hast thou come to me— Love’s jewelled ruy—’mong hopeless darkness cast ? I Bound, then, my heart intense ! inspired by thee, Oh, tiny sweet, I breathe ? despair I east To the black depths of dole. I eomo, 1 coine, Where though dost lead —fcncrc finds my heart its home.
