THE CHARGE OF PERJURY AGAINST MR ADAMS, M.H.R
ACQUITTAL OK THE ACCUSED. The charge of perjury against Mr Acton Adams, was concluded last night a little after eleven, the Court having sat for thirteen hours, as the case was called on at ten in the the morning. However, an hour and a half was spent in setting the special jury. Of the panel of 30, Mr Conolly, who defended, challenged ten, and Mr Fell and Mr Bunny, for the prosecution, ordered twelve to stand aside, and when the list was got through there were only nine jurors in the box. The remaining number not attending, and tiiose for whom medical men did not attend, were fined L 5 each. The list was again commenced, and Mr Fell then claimed to try certain jurors, but ultimately agreed to take the fiest twelve by ballot, and the case then proceeded. For the prosecution, Mr Baddeley, Clerk of the Court, Judge Broad, Mr Donald, the purckasor of Maraliau, Mr Thomas, the late owner and mortgagor of same, Mr Edward Moore, solicitor, w>’o took notes at the District Court, and Mr Jones, articled clerk to Mr Adams, were the witnesses called, but the case for tlic prosecution was not so strong as wen the magistrates. At the conclusion of the case for the prosecution, Mr Conolly said lie should call no witnesses, and Mr Fell then addressed the jury for half-an-hour, making a good, temperate speec. Mr Conolly followed for an lionr-and-a-half in a most effective speech. The Court was crowded. The Clieif Justice’s summing up accupied two hours, and the jury retired. In just over half-an-hour they announced a verdict of “ Not Guilty,” which was received with some applause. His Honor expressed his entire concurrence in the verdict.
