Mr Kelly, member for New Plymouth, addressed bis constituents last night, and was well received. A vote of thanks for past services, and expressions of confidence in him, was carried unanimously.

NAPIER. Thursday. A mail was arrested up country on Saturday on suspicion of being tlie absconding witness Lyons, who ran away when away when wanted for the prosecution of Macnamara for arson at Invercargill. Prisoner denied his identity, and had “ Mark Murphy ” tatooed on his arm, otherwise he answered the Gazette description. A telegram from Inspector Fox, at Invercargill, stated he would not prosecute, so the prisoner was discharged. At the District Court the case, Ellis v. Lawrenson, a claim for £55, in which judgment was given for defendant, was an interesting case to sporting men. Lawrenson drew Grand Duchess in the Derby sweep on the Tradesmens’ Cup at last Hawkes Bay races, and Ellis agreed to buy Lawrenson's ticket for £25. Au agreement was drawn out, signed by both parties, and stamped, and the ticket also was endorsed to the same effect. Grand Duchess proving only to he an “ other starter,” entitled the holder of the ticket to £IOO. Lawrenson instructed the holder of tlie sweep money not to pay Ellis, and received it himself, hence the action. The judgment caused considerable surprise.
