The other members of the Commission went toNelson overland from Lyttelton. DUNEDIN. Thursday. The Mayor of Dunedin forwards by today’s mail a draft to Dublin for £205, making the Dunedin total contribution to the Irish Relief Fund amounts to £IBOS. Mr Watt has paid to the natives the interest on the final payment of £4OOO in respect of the Princess-streat reserve. This morning a two-roomed cottage in South Invercargill, owned by Peter Dunn, and occupied by F. Hernster and family, was burned down. It was worth £IOO, and nearly all the funiture was destroyed. So far as is known no insurance was held on the property. AUCKLAND. May 5. Commodore Wilson, of H.M.S. Wolverine, lias returned to town from the Waikato. He states he has not received any cablegram announcing the safety of the Atlanta training ship, it appears she was a sailing vessel, formerly on the Australian station, and known as the Juno, being in commission from 1853 to ISSS. Thursday. The auditor refused to pass the accounts of the Waitcniata County Council, who voted and deducted £1 for each member’s attendance for travelling expenses. The Council will consult the Attorney-General on the matter. The Civil Service Commission yesterday examined McDonald (general manager of Auckland railways), and Mr Daudo (railway storekeeper.) A complimentary dinner was given last night at the Northern Club to Commodore Wilson and the officers of H.M.S. Wolverine, and to Captain Chtulen and the officers of the German war-ship Nautilus. Several members of both Houses of Parliament were present. Sir George Grey’s central committee met to-day, to make arrangements for a public meeting on Friday evening. At the Police Court to-day a milkman was charged with mixing water with milk with intent to defraud. The case was adjourned, WANGANUI. Thursday. Mr Ballanco addressed his constituents last night, and declared himself a faithful adherent of the Opposition. He spoke for two hours, and was most cordially received. Four speakers urged that if his constituents passed a vote of confidence in Ballanco it implied a vote of censure on Bryce, but an amendment of “No confidence” was rejected by 500 to about 20 votes. A vote ij. confidence was carried almost unanimously. Three cheers were given for Ballance at the close of the meeting, which lasted till long past midnight.
