CHRISTCHURCH. May 1. In order to meet the increasing trade requirements, the Kaiapoi Woollen Mill will be kept going night and day from Monday next. At last night’s sitting of the Synod, the Bishop of Melanesia presented a memorial from the temperance bodies of Christchurch drawing the attention of Synod to the terrible moral and social evils resulting from the excessive use of alcoholic liquors. Judge Johnston proceeded to Wellington last night to attend the sitting of the Court of Appeal. In reply to number of residents of Lyttelton and Christchurch, asking that their services might he accepted as a Volunteer Naval Brigade, the under Secretary for Defence has written that the Government arc unable to comply with the request no funds being available to pay the capitation, &c. DUNEDIN. May 3. Professor Parker, assistant to Professor Huxley at London University, lias been appointed Professor of Natural History and Curator of the Museum. The fire on the premises of 11. F. Dench at Port Chalmers oil Saturday morning totally destroyed the building and furniture, the inmates having a narrow escape. The insurances are £2OO on the furniture, and £2OO on the building in the Union office, but the less is estimated at £l5O. The holder of a nortgage on the property has another insurance of £OOO in the New Zealand. TIMARU. April. 30. The Geraldine County Council passed a resolution to-day requesting the Governor to issue an Order in Council prohibiting the importation of cattle bv sea to the South Island, whether from the North Island or the Australian colonies. OAMARU. April 30. Two candidates have announced themselves for the. representation of Waitaki in the House of Representatives—Mr Duncan Sutherland, Omaramara, and Mr W. IT. S. Roberts, of Oamaru. It is uncertain whether Mr Reid will stand. Mr Roberts is only a recent arrival in Oamaru, but Mr Sutherland has been a resident for twelve years. John Rogers, rabbitter for McKellar, was found on Sunday, at Blue Mountains, near Tapanui, with his head severed from his body, having been shot by one barrel of his gun exploding while he was charging the other. The steamer Kakanui which went ashore at Toi Toi harbor got off yesterday with comparatively little damage. The Wellington treasurer of the Irish Famine Relief Fund states that the following subscriptions have been received since the last return was published : —S. S. Downes £2 2s. The balance of the fund £G7 15s was sent Home via Brindisi to-day.
