[reuter’s telegrams.] LONDON. April 13. Ifc is announced from Paris that a vessel conveying French exhibits to the Melbourne Exhibition will leave in May. In view of the approaching resignation of the Ministry, Lord Lytton, Viceroy of India, has been raised to an earldom.
The training ship Atalanta, with 300 souls on hoard, is reported missing. She left Bermuda at the end of January, returning from a cruise there. Great anxiety prevails regarding her safety. The Channel Squadron has been ordered to search for the missing vessel.
ADELAIDE. April ,13. The imports for the past quarter amounted to £9,530,000, The exports for the same period amounted to £9,527,000. April* 14. "Wheat in Adelaide, 4s 5d ; wheat at out-ports, 45.3 d, MELBOURNE. April 13. His Excellency the Governor laid the foundation stone of the Melbourne Cathedral to-day. There was a large attendance and the proceedings were carried out with considerable ceremony. The Union Company’s steamship Te Anau sailed for Now Zealand to-day. April IG. New Zealand oats are slow of sale at 2s 3d; sugar at auction lias realised LI per ton higher. ItJ is stated here that Messrs Money Wigram’s steamship Norfolk will on her next trip from England go direct to Lyttelton ancl Wellington.

Thursday. A child, aged two years, died suddenly at Black Ball to-day. The case of the Police v. Doreen, for refusing the police admittance on the night of April 10, was dismissed. Police v. Fear, for gambling, the decision was adjourned to next Court day.
[FROM OUR WELLINGTON CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. At the Colonial Treasury, yesterday afternoon, accounts were formally closed for the past financial year of 1879-80. It will take some days however to balance accounts, and still longer to ascertain accurately the outstanding liabilities which have to be carried fo ward to next year. All practicable expedition will be used in making up the balance sheet, in order that the actual financial position of the Calmly may be ascertained as early as possible with the view of devising ways aud means -before Parliament meets. A deputation of the City Counciljwaited on Government to-day, protesting against the new railway station being built of wood, as being against a regulation of the City Council. The result I s n °h y e h known. A running match between J. Tidswill and D. Judd for LSO a side, which was postponed a short time ago, is now fixed to come off on Saturday afternoon next on the Basin Reserve.
During the search for the missing men supposed to be drowned in the Wairarapa Lake, the police have been informed that the hat of Cross has been found ; also a dog dead, which is known to have acoompanied the young men in their unfortunate excursion ; also part of the boat broke n up. The Civil Service Commission have completed their business at Tiinaru, but a day will be spent at Ashburton, throe or four days at Christchurch, and at Wellington some of the Under-Secretaries will be examined. The Commission will then leave for Napier and Auckland, after which Wanganui and New Plymouth will be visited. After their return to Wellington, they will visit Nelson '»
GREYMOUTH. Thursday. An elderly man uamed John Henderson, dropped down dead this morning in the Government workshop. The verdict that he died from heart disease was returned. * WANGANUI. Thursday. The Steeplechase Meeting is fixed for the 19th June. The programme consists of a Handicau Steeplechase of l7ssovs, Maiden Steepleohase of SOsovs., and Consolation of 30sovs. The nominations for the Handicap close on 15th May. It is proposed to give Freeman E. Jackson, the Honorary Secretary of the Jockey Club a testimonial in recognition of his services in raising the Waugauui races to the front rank among the racing meetings of tho meeting. DUNEDIN. April 13. The alleged cases at Forbury of small-pox has no foundation in fact. April 14. The sum of £l5O was collected for the presentation of some plate to Mr Hallenstcin, of the New Zealand Clothing Factory —who isleaviug for Europe. Mr Hallenstein asked that the money might be placed towards fouuding a fund for the amelioration of distress amongst his employees, which was done, the firm supplementing it by £SO. A South Dunedin publican has been robbed of £4O, which he had left in his till.
Thursday. The charge of wilful murder against Butler is being taken in the presence of a crowd ed Court. Prisoner, who is undefended, exercised the full right to challenge when the jury was being empanuellcd. The Crown challenged two jurors. TIMAItU. April 13. The Civil Service Commission to-day examined the station-master and Resident Magistrate. At the District Court to-day George Cliff, ex-Mayor of Timaru, applied for an order of discharge, but Judge Ward suspended the certificate for IS mouths. Thursday. The ship Commodore, which sailed for London to-day, discharged and loaded over 1000 tons in nine working days, which is an exceptional amount, other shipping work being done during the same time. HOKITIKA. April 13. Several cases’,'of diptheria have broken out in the town, and in consequence tho State school has been closed for a time, CHRISTCHURCH. _ April 13. The man Graves charged with larceny at Saiulridge. was committed for trial at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The lease of the City Hotel for twenty - one years was taken yesterday. The caso against Graham Flowers for stealing fifteen "head of cattle from Walker Brothers, valued at L 135, was heard to-day at Rangiora. A large amount of evidence was heard, and ultimately accused was formally committed for trial at the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed,'accused in Lsi b and two sureties of L 250. At the'same Court, Jarvis Nelson was charged with setting fire to eleven stacks of grain at Mount Thomas, knowing them to he insured. He also was committed for trial. The charge against W. Major, of assisting him, being deferred to Tuesday next. Bail was allowed, himself in LSOO, and two sureties of 1250. During the past year there have been eighthy-two fires in Canterbury, on which claims have been paid to the amount of £53,440. Of this £32,000 was for conflagrations in'Christchurch. For three months, however, there has been no fire here, ever since, in fact, the lad Osborne was arrested. April 14. A crop of oats from the farm of Mr J. White, Waiterton, has yielded 87A bushels to the acre. At Southbridgc, on Monday, a stack of straw near the Union Bank of Australia was found to be on fire. Owing to the efforts of the townspeople it was subdued before much damage was done. It is not known bow it became ignited.
Mr Redwood, with his racehorses Anteros and Norseman, went to Picton by the Hawea yesterday. At the third meeting of ratepayers held last night relative to the drainage rate, Mr Hubbard, surveyor, made some peculiar disclosures as to the preparation of the s lecifications for the Drainage Board office. Resolutions were carried unanimously expressing the strong dissatisfaction of the district relative to drainage matters generally. Thursday.
A walking match lias been arranged for the 20th May, at Christchurch, between C. Bowley, of that place, and O'Connor, of Timaru, distance seven miles, for LIOO a side. Two thoroughbred mares arrived per Palala for Mr Stead yesterday. A man, whose name at present is unknown, but who was in the employ of Mr G. Holmes, Mount Harding, cut his throat on Wednesday. He is in a very precarious state, and it is believed that drunkouness was the cause of the rash act.
GRAHAMSTOWN. April 14. Mr Olliver came to the Thames via Waikato, Mr Sheehan accompanying him. Tho Government have forwarded £3OOO to the County Board for the construction of a road through 'Tu,kukin’s laud to the Upper Thames. An active canvass to place qualified persons on the roll is going on. It is anticipated ovor 5000 pcrsous will he registered.
OAM -KRU. April 13. About 700 persons attended Fleming and Hedlcy’s sale of draught stock to-day. There were a number from different parts of the Colony, but the prices realised were not up to the value of the stock, and this must be taken as an evidence of a feeble money market. The bidding was languid, and the highest price roalised fora draught mare was 10Q£ guineas. Young Vanquisher was sold to the Hon. R. Campbell for 390 guinea# : this horse cost Fleming and Hedley L7SQ two years ago. Glen Lyon, another entire, was sold for LIGS, a. cheap price, as he was first as a three-year-old at the Oamaru Show last year. The draught mares averagod about 50 guineas. A number of good stock will bo offered to-morrow ami it is expected the bidding will show a little more animation.
AUCKLAND. April 13. The B'far has a strong article on the allegations that are current that an attempt was made to tamper with the jury in the oase of Hughes, for alleged indeoentassanlt on his servant. The Star publishes the statement of one juryman who was challenged, to the effect that during the week previous to the sitting of the Court a person called upon him and asked if be would be favorable to Hughes, and that this person had lists of other jurors he was deputed to call on. The juror replied, jndignautly resenting so nefarious a suggestion, and he was subsequently challenged by the defence. The Star demands a searching investigation into these statements, and calls on Mr Justice Richmond to purge bis Court of even the suspicion of such Infamies. It declares that if they be tolerated the powerful man, the man of wealth and influence, may do wrong with impunity, and the poor will be without redress. It says that until the truth of these statements. is thoroughly sifted the public and the ends of justice will not he satisfiod.
