HAVELOCK.
[fkom our own correspondent.] April 5. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court (before W. E. Dive, Esq., J.P.) Donald Macdonaid, charged with drunkenness on Saturday last, pleaded guilty, and was fined 5s and 7s costs. The Gaiety Variety Troupe have given three entertainments, last night being the final one. They have had fair houses and have been much appreciated. Tf they had issued programmes of the performances it would have been a convenience to the audience. The playing and singing of Miss Potter is undeniably good, and in my opinion the best of her songs was “ Mother is with the Angels now,” which she rendered with taste anil feeling. Mr Hayes also sang well, his rendering of the “ Village Blacksmith,” and “Nil Desperandum ” were very successful. Of the Irish characters sustained by Mr Gill and the lady who performed with him jt is only necessary to state they literally brought down the house. The “Skipping-rope dance” and “ Sand jig ” were well done, and evidently gave satisfaction. Whilst treating of music and entertainments 1 may call attention to the want of a piano-forte for the Town Hall which is much required. At a Vestry meeting of St Peter’s Church held on Monday evening, April sth, Mr Vcnniinore in the Chair, it was proposed by Mr H. L. N. Clarke, seconded by Mr G. A. Empson, and carried unanimously— That a special vote of thanks be i/iven to Mr Antonio Vannini for his (professional) services at the concert held in the Town Hall on the 31st March, During the past week three vessels have arrived, the Colleen Pawn and Star of the Seas from Wellington, and the Gohlseeker from Nelson. The Gold-seeker sailed for Nelson to-day. An accident happened to Mr Evan Jones’ daughter at Kaituna on Saturday evening last. Sin- was leading a young horse when it suddenly reared its head and the little finger of her left hand in some way got jammed and was broken.
I am happy to hear that the accident which happened to Alfred Peters yesterday morning is likely to take a favorable turn. His medical attendant does not think any vital part is injured. A small Hospital is much needed here, as accidents frequently happen, and a public-house if a very inconvenient place for a sick man to be in. When saying this I do not mean to infer that a patient is not well treated there, for in my opinion the people of Havelock and neighborhood are as kind a community towards the sick and suffering as are to. be found anywhere, but nevertheless I think a cottage" Hospital should, if possible, he established here.
