SPORTING.

On We nesday last a considerable number of the sporting fraternity mustered on the racecourse to witness two matches between several well-known horses. The hist was between Mr Kelly’s EairhaU and Mr H. (J. O’Leary's Blenheim, for £5 aside, each to carry lOst (jib. This was a most deceiving race, the betting being in favor of Fairhall, but owing to the superior judgment of Blenheim’s rider, suocecled in winn gby about a length. The second race was a match between Leary’s Blenheim, Dillon’s Foul Play, and Henderson* Omaka, for a. sweep of £ m 2 each, which, after a rather spirited contest, was won by Foul Play by a neck. We understand there is a probability of another match taking place between Fairhall and Blenheim for £2O aside. NAPIER RACES. Napier, Mar. 18. Hurdle Race—Grey Momus 1. On Thursday last as advertised the District Prize Firing for the Blenheim Com-, pany of Rifle Volunteers took place at the Vernon range. On the last two occasions this event has come off at Tua Marina, where ail the Companies in the District have met and completed on a neutral range. This year, owing to the paucity of prize money, the different Companies preferred tiring each on their own range, and taking their chance to the weather. This arrangement has proved most unfortunate as far as our local Company is eo. .corned, as on Thursday a South-east breeze prevailed, voilent, misty, and constantly shifting. Good shooting was impossible, and our representatives were constantly considerably dialled at the fact that, however well they might be able to shoot in Nelson, they failed at home. The following are the scores, from w. ch it will be seen that as usual Sub-Lieut. Rogers occupies first
