THE GARDEN.

VEGETABLE GARDEN. Sow a good quantity of onion seed in drills about 6 inches wide and | inch deep, the drills being drawn about 12 inches or 15 inches from each other and they should be well watered before the seed is sown, and this should be sown thickly, as most of them will be drawn while in a green state for use in spring. Celery may yet be planted for late use. Thin lettuce from the seed beds and plant out, but they must be watered to get them to grow during the hot weather, and other sowing should be made. Endive requires similar treatment, with the addition of blanching, which is easily done by placing an inverted flower pot, saucer, or soup plate over each plant when about fully grown; a few days or a week is sufficiently long to complete the process, and a limited number only should be covered at one time, for if not used they soon spoil. A succession of radish should go in also; the olive-shaped is an excellent kind for this time of the year, and is ready for for drawing in almost any time.

FRUIT GARDEN. Many kinds of autumn pears are now approaching maturity, and should be carefully gathered before the dropping, and packed away for a short time. Butwhere the trees have been denuded of foliage by the blight leech* the fruit will ripen sooner than on those in full leaf, although it will not be so good a quality. In some cases the trees are starting inlo growth, and the season admits of the foliage being matured. Next season’s fruit will be materially improved. Prepare a good breadth of ground for planting strawberries next month.
