THE GARDEN.
VEGETABLE GARDEN. Sow white stone and golden ball turnip for autumn and winter use. The growing celery is now ready for earthing up, but this must be clone a little at a time, and care taken, by holding the stems close together in one hand, and at the same time drawing the soil to the plants with the other by means of a light spade. Whatever spare ground there is ought to be filled with brocoli, savoy, drumhead cabbage, or other kinds of plants for winter, giving them a thorough good watering at time of planting. Tomatoes must must have the slmots and foliage reduced, so that the fruit is fully opened up to the sun, and unless this is attended to good and well matured tomatoes need not be expected. In clearing the ground of onions and other produce, the surface should be chipped over to cut up all weeds, and as soon as time will permit the ground ought to be manured and roughly dug for future crops.
FLOWER GARDEN. To keep the display of bloom, and also reserve the neatness and continuancy of the floral decorations, some extra care and watchfulness is necessary. Asters, dahlias, and other free growing plants, of a soft wooded habit, must have frequent applications of liquid manure. When cutting grass plots with the machine in hot weather turn the screw so that the blade or cutting knife is about 2 inches from the surface.
