FINGERS MUTILATED.
CAUGHT BY MACHINERY. Accident at Putaruru. A painful accident bcfcl Mr. G. A, Howland, a well-known Putaruru resident, last Thursday. He was employed on joinery work at Mr. N. It. Ashford’s shop, Main street, and when starting to use the automatic woodworker the fingers of one hand came into contact with the revolving blades. The middle finger was shockingly lacerated, while the two adjoining fingers were also badly cut about. The injured man was alone in the shop at the time, and made bis way to Dr. Haslctt’s surgery, where the doctor rendered first aid and found it necessary to take the patient to Matamata for the assistance of Dr. Laurenson to amputate the middle finger above the first joint. The trip was made by car, and the operation duly performed. The patient returned home, but on Saturday was transferred by direction of the doctor to the Hamilton hospital. Mr. Howland is a married man with a family of seven children.
