MATAMATA TELEPHONES.
A CONTINUOUS SERVICE. “ Farmers Dead Against It.” The question of a continuous telephone service for Matamata was ventilated at a mooting of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union held on Saturday evening. It was coni’ sidered by a member that the number of subscribers to Hie Matamata telephone exchange justified representations being made to the Department for a continuous service. The chairman was asked if lie had any idea as to how much per annum extra for each subscriber it was likely to cost. The reply being to the effect that the postmaster had advised that the additional fee would be £l, Mr. B. Blenerhassett asked if the extra convenience, particularly with regard to medical night calls and Sunday break-downs in milking plant, would not merit it, but the feeling of the meeting seemed to be that these advantages were not worth the small’ charge extra. Mr. A. Bowler hazarded that if a plebiscite concerning the proposal were taken among the farmers, a substantial majority would be “ dead # against it.” No action was taken in connection with the matter.
