MOTOR VERSUS RAILWAY.

EFFECT OF HIGH FREIGHTS. The Levin Co-op. Dairy Co. wrote the; Horowhenua County Council at its meeting recently enclosing a copy of a letter forwarded to the Minister for Railways re.freight on benzine, kerosene and butter, and asked for support. The letter suggested " that owing to the enormous amount of damage done to county roads paused by heavy motor traffic in carting benzine, etc., together with the loss of revenue to the Railway Department, and in order to minimise the said damage and loss, the Railway Department be asked to consider the reduction of freights on the abovementioned goods'at the earliest possible moment." The chairman considered the letter should be supported and moved accordingly.'- " ';• Cr. Broadbelt said the Railway Department a year'ago had promised to do something but had failed. Cr. Harkness'considered it was tho high rates that had-forced the traffic to the roads, and that if freights were brought: down- the railway would get more revenue." '

TJic letter is'to be supported by the County Council, . '
