TE POI BACHELORS.

ANNUAL BALL. A Huge Success. Some 12-months ago soma of th* progressive bachelor spirits of Te Poi gathered together to. discuss a proposal to take advantage of the erection of the new hall and hold a grand ball. The function which resulted was a huge success, such a success that it was decided to make the affair an annual one. The second annual ball was held last Thursday and proved to be an even greater function thnn its predecessor. It attracted dancing enthusiasts from as far away as Te Aroha and Gordonton and a large number from Matamata and surrounding districts. Those that made Ihe long journeys were well repaid for their trouble. It is computed 'hat there were over 100 couples present The visitors were greeted with a magnificently - decorated porch, while in the hall itself the effect was dazzling. The scheme of decorations, carried out under the direction of Mr. jlLatta, was worked with pungas amT clematis on the stage and walls and from the latter hung coloured festoons leading to a huge fancy bell in the centre. So excellent.were these arrangements that the effect was almost maeical. Added to this were the beautiful dresses of the ladies and in this connection it is quite safe to sav that it is seldom that a country dance is as brilliant. The bachelors committee had spared no energy on the floor, which was in excellent condition and remained- so during the evening despite the huge number of dancers. Added to this was the splendid music supplied by an orchestra composed of Miss Kusabs (piano), Mrs. Burke (violin), Mr. M.Bates (cornet) and Mr. H. Cleland (double bass). ... A special feature of the evening was the sit-down supper, the arrangements for which were in the capable hands of Mr. Follett and his staff. The tables in the supper-room were beautifully decorated with violets, daffodils and ferns and were laden with dainty edibles, so as to really resemble a wedding feast. The assemblage was loud in its praise of the arrangements in this department. While supper was in progress extra dances were nicely played by Mrs. Read, Miss Keary and Mr. A. Skinner. The function was continued until nearly 3 sun., at which time there was still a large number present. The bachelors of Te Poi set themselves a high standard in 1922 but went even better in 1923. The hospitality was unbounded and was so favourably remarked upon that the next event will be looked forward to as one of the social functions of the yejjr in the Matamata district. The committee is deserving of every credit for its arrangements but is fortunate in having "a secretary with the ability and energy of Mr. H. Walls. No matter was too big or too small to receive his personal attention and he is deserving of high praise. Valuable assistance was given him by Mr. J. Ken-. The M.'sC, Messrs. H. J. Bailev* A. A. Thomson* «L Aiteheson an<L,*R. Fairweather, -had onerous duties to perform but they carried these out with credit. "One of the best dances I have been to," was Si remark heard on all sides at the conclusion 6*f the function. The bachelors of Te Poi certainly know how to run a ball.
