A cat figures in one of the best stories wo have heard concerning the local mayoral election (says the Mataura Ensign)., A Gore business man recently retired, went north, and left his cat and a few shillings with one of the juniors of the establishment. The money was to pay for the cat’s food. At election time the owner of the cat returned to town. He inquired of the junior the state of the cat fund, and expressed surprise that the exchequer had not been totally depleted. " Oh, the cat has free meat this week,” was the reply.,“l bet the butcher a-week’s allowance of meat that Poppehvell would win the mayoral election.” I’m an “Alice in Wonderland” sort of girl, With a wonderful lesson lo learn; I’ve bobbed my hair, I’m " warming a chair ” In the ruck of a Tivoli turn. I sing myself hoarse in the chorus, of course, ’Tis a terrible,.strain to endure; Before an encore, while they’re yelling for more, I take Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. (14)
