PUTARURU.
Pastimes Club. The first annual meeting of the Putaruru Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club was held on Tuesday evening. Wet weather militated against the attendance, although thoso present were very enthusiastic about the prospects of the club. Mr F. C. Barnett presidedThe annual report referred at length to the formation of the club, and the gift of a War Memorial Park by Mr F. C- Barnett. The Grounds Committee employed a contractor to do the heavier part of tho levelling of ground. After this preliminary work, the committee, by the aid of working bees, has fenced the park and completed the levelling. This has entailed considerable labour, and the thanks of tho club are due to those who so willingly contributed their labour and time to this work, including both members of the committee and outside sympathisers who are not as yet members of the club; also to the ladies’ committee, which supplied the workers with refreshments on each occasion. The first work that your committee recommends should be proceeded with is the formation of tennis courts and croquet lawn, the planting of hedge trees, and erection of an ornamental fence on the roadline. The courts must of course be laid down by contract, but your committee feels that the other works can bo safely done under the system of working bees which has already proved so successful. We have been fortunate in securing from the Matamata County Council a subsidy of £l5O to bo applied in improving the War Memorial Park. The subsidy is payable in three yearly payments of £SO each, the first of which has been received. Your committee wishes to record its thanks to those outside helpers who have given a great deal of time and thought to the interests of the club, foremost of whom is Mr F. Shannon, the county engineer, who has done everything possible and devoted a great deal of his time to the work on the grounds. Special thanks are due also to Mr W. C. Hewitt, who has carried through the necessary legal work so far, and who still is attending to matters of registration of the club and legal work generally. Work of such nature as this and that of Mr Shannon is a genuine donation to the club, which is highly appreciated. The report was adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
