WAHAROA.

Political Address. Hon. W. H. Herries addressed a large gathering of electors in the hall on Tuesday, the 2nd of December, receiving a 'very good hearing. His speech was on the same lines, and covered all the ground dealt with in the published report of his Matamata address. In dealing with old age pensions he favoured the universal old age pension, which would enable the old people who have been thrifty and have saved up a small amount for a rainy day and yet have not enough to live on, to reap the same benefits as those who have gone the-pace in younger days and now receive the full benefit of the pension scheme. \A vote of thanks and confidence, proposed by Mr Mason, was declared carried by the chairman, MV Tong.

J IN MEMORIAM. Acting on a suggestion made / some time ago pt a reception to returned soldiers, a ladies committee, headed by Mrs Blyth, undertook the duty of raising funds for the erection of a memorial tablet to be placed in the \ public hall. The tablet, which is a fine bit of workmanship, was unveiled by Mr Herries before commencing his political address. In a brief speech Mr Herries referred to the noble death of the men who died for the cause of honour and liberty. The names of those who left Waharoa and made the supreme sacrifice afe:— Privates Hollis, Young, and Paton and Rifleman Hill.. The thanks of the residents are due to Mrs Blyth and her committee for their efforts in perpetuating the meniory of these gallant young men who all left New'Healand early in the war to figlijgfor King and '■:< country. SOLDIER SETTLERS * A deputation from the soldiers on Matamata North block waited on Mr Herries and placed before him a number of grievances in connection wjth their holdings. The deputation received a very

patient, hearing and a promise that ho would use his influence and special knowledge of the conditions to put things right, at the same time stating that the requests of the deputation were very reasons Ole.
