THE FARMERS’ UNION.
A Backward Branch. At the Matamata County Council meeting on Friday, a letter was read from the Railway Department, consenting to the lease of sites for the storage of metal at Hinuera, Okoroire, Matamata, and Waharoa stations. Tho Department staled that it could not consent to the application for a site at Tirau, owing to possible congestion. ' The letter drew forth remarks from members as to why the Department has taken up the attitude regarding Tirau, and it was stated that the local branch of the Farmers’ Union had objected to the site being leased. Tbe chairman: "That’s news to me. I can’t understand that attitude.” A member: “It’s funny them objecting to a site for the storage of their own metal.” Cr. Banks:* “It’s their own lookout.” Member No. 4: “It’s not their own look-out; there are only about five of them attend the meetings. They discuss local politics, and that’s fatal to a branch.” , After further comment on the composition of the branch, it was decided to make further representations to tho Department.
