FOOTBALL.
The Matamata ‘Union representatives travelled to Te Aroha on Saturday to meet the Piako representatives after an interval of about eight years. With the exception of about two men the team was as selected, consequently a much better game than tbe-previous week was provided. The ground was very wet, but that did not afford Matamata an excuse for the lack of ginger in the first quarter. Piako gained a lead of six points in that period of play and this was not reduced a point until the last quarter. From this out Matamata had slightly the better of the play f and scored points in each remaining spell. On two other occasions they had bad luck in not scoring, on one of which F. Connell got over, but was, brought back for a doubtful throw forward. Tries were scored for Matamata by Pitts and T. Douglas, and Munro kicked a penalty goal. The team played well, and with just a bit of the luok of the game would have won. The Piako men put plenty of vim into their work, and received great assistance from the veteran S. Auckland, and North Island representative, Alf Lennard. Poland was the pick of the forwards, but young players in Goldsworthy and Moon were also very good. A lesson of the match to Matamata should be the fast following up of Piako, and the manner in which they packed round. In both matches they have played the Matamata men have been lacking in these points. The following team has been selected to represent Matamata against Cambridge, at Matamata on Saturday:—W. Ryan, F. Connell, Maisey, Murray, Mathews, Stewart, Dickie, C. Brindle, Thomson, Quinlan, L. Connell, Munro, T. Douglas, Sheehan, F. Holmes. Reserves H. Sutherland* Pitts, Fisher, J. Douglas, W* Douglas and S. Brindle.
