THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 1919 Brief Mention of all Minor Happenings in Matamata and Vicinity.

Office Tower Road P.O. Box 38 ’Phone 82

The Only Paper published in the Matamata County

The annual meeting of subscribers to the public library will be held on Saturday evening. A hard-up social and masquerade ball will be held in aid of the Putaruru hall funds at Putaruru on Friday, September sth, 1919.

The first home representative union match to be played on the Matamata ground will be between Cambridge and Matamata on Saturday next. Permission has been granted the union to charge for admission.

At the annual meeting of subscribers to the Matamata hall fund, the secretary, Mr Gordon, who had acted since the hall was erected, was voted an honorarium of 50 guineas. It was stated that this was the only payment ever made to the secretary, who had previously refused to take anything for his services. About sixty friends assembled at the residence of Mrs M. Stanley, Waharoa road, on an evening of last week to attend the reception given Gunner S. and Trooper T. Stanley, both soldiers who have recently returned from active service. The evening was devoted to song, dance and games, and was an immenee success, being a fitting function to two popular “boys.” At the annual meeting of the hall committee on Monday the chairman paid a great tribute to the secretary, Mr W. A. Gordon, who has filled the position since the committee was first formed. He said that the secretary\had held his post through times which were not as prosperous as at present, and all through had declined financial recognition. He had stayed long enough to see the hall wholly free, and with a credit balance. His services had been of the greatest value, and a great deal of the success attained was due to his efforts.
