MATAMATA HALL
Subscribers’ Annual Meeting.
The annual meeting of the .subscribers to the Matamata public , hall was held on Monday evening. Mr J. Pohlen (chairman) presided over an attendance of about fifteen members. The balance-sheet was read by the secretary, Mr W. A. Gordon, and showed nett profits for the year amounting to £3Ol 8s 4d. j In his report the chairman stated that the overdraft had been reduced to nil, due to the running of the picture programme. This had been the main source of revenue and profit. During the year the committee had been the means of disbursing £53 7s to patriotic and charitable causes, and now had a property of the value of £1415 12s 9d free of debt; this after allowing £72 8s 3d depreciation. This he thought was a very low value for the building and plant, which was really worth considerably more. Mr Pohlen referred to tho services rendered by the secretary, and then read a clause in tho articles of association dealing with tho trustees power to hand tho building over to tho controlling local body. Before proceeding with tho election of officers he would like to hear an expression of opinion as to the course to be pursued, from some of the subscribers. Mr Livingstone asked what would become of any profits made if a committee continued in control for another year. Mr Pohlen said the money would go to the public hall fund. He pointed out that there was ample scope for expenditure on improvements. To Mr Mclntyre: The guarantors are now released of responsibility, and if a further loan is required fresh guarantors will have to bo obtained. Mr W. Egan moved and Mr B. C. Taylor secondod that a vote on the question of recommending the trustees to offer the hall to the town board, be taken. In speaking to the motion Mr H. W. Smales said he was pleased to hear the proposition come from a member of the committee. He had, however, come to the meeting prepared to suggest the erection of a supper room.
The chairman said the motion, to his mind, was not quite in order, and suggested that a general meeting bo called. It was but a point, and it practically amounted to tho same thing, for he thought the subscribers were of the one mind.
Mr Egan then moved that an extraordinary general meeting be called. This motion was carried the meeting to be held on Tuesday, August 26th. Mr Price spoke of the services rendered by the outgoing committee and also the secretary. He moved that the meeting’s appreciation of the whole of the officers be recorded in the minutes. Mr Price also moved that the sitting committee be re-elected. This was carried unanimously. In thanking the meeting Mr Pohlen said the committee had always worked harmoniously and had worked in the interests of the town.
At the subsequent meeting ot the committee Mr J. Pohlen was elected chairman, Mr W. A. Gordon, secretary (both for the eighth term) and Mr J. Mclntyre, treasurer.
