The annual meeting of the racing club will be held in the town hall to-morrow night. Messrs Hutchison and Hookey, solicitors, have removed to offices situated in the Pharmacy buildings. The attention of farmers is drawn to a notice in this issue regarding the monthly meeting of the Farmers' Union, which is fixed for to-morrow evening. An attempt to form a much needed institution—a beautifying society —is to be made in Matamata, and a meeting is called for Thursday of next week. Mr J. Price is convenor.
We are pleased to be able to state that Mr and Mrs W. W. Livingstone's child has so far recovered from the illness which attacked it recently as to be removed from the Waikato hospital. The little one was brought home on Monday. Woods' Grpat Peppermint Cure, For Coughs fiiid Colds, never fails.
A special general meeting of the tennis club was held on Monday evening for the purpose of receiving the balance sheet, prior to the secretary's (Mr M. McDermott) departure from the district. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £5 9s 2d, and a hearty vote of thanks was proposed to the secretary. Mr Hookey was appointed secretary pro tern and several new members were elected. The Matamata-'Red Cross league, having ceased operations under that name, Miss Sergeant, who has been secretary for the past two and a-half years has relinguished the secretarial post. Residents will be in hearty accord with the motion of thanks passed to that lady by the members at their last meeting. Miss Sargeant carried out the duties in a wholehearted and efficient manner, showing herself to be well fitted for the post. Mr H. A. Whitaker, manager of the firm of Messrs J.- Pomeroy and Co., of Auckland, Waikato and Thames Valley, left New Zealand on Wednesday en route for America and Canada. In conversation with our representative Mr Whitaker stated that the trip was rendered necessary through the shortage of labor, and the consequent necessity for the most improved machinery. Prior to leaving he was farewelled by the staff of Messrs Pomeroy and Co., when he was the recipient of many good wishes. Mr Whitaker expects to be absent about four-months. The Rev. D. Hird, M.A., Rotorua, who acted as Moderator during the recent vacancy of the Matamata Presbyterian Church, has received a unanimous call to the pastorate of the church at Opotiki, in the Auckland Presbytery. The salary offered is £3OO per annum with manse and the promise of a motor car to facilitate his pastoral work in the parish. The Presbytery of Waikato sustained the call at its monthly meeting on Tuesday of this week, at the same time' expressing its regret at the translation of the Rev. D. Hird owing to the wise counsel he had always been able and willing to give during its varied and manifold deliberations. The induction at.Opotiki will take place at an early date.
