Members of the Matamata Farmers’ union are reminded of an important meeting to be held to-morrow (Friday) night. A full attendance is requested. Mr and Mrs A. Lambourne, and Mr and Mrs Flett. are at present in Auckland meeting Lieut. A. f. Flett, who is returning from active service this week. Two accidents of a similar nature occurred in Matamata on Sunday, Mrs D. Morrow and Mr W. J. Holmes both sustained fractured ankles. Both patients are now progressing favorably. Constable J. Murphy left Putaruru on Tuesday in response to an urgent call to Dunedin where his father is ill. During his absence Constable Johnston ot * Rotorua will be in charge of the district. The Matamata Peace celebrations will bo held on either July 19th or July 21st, the exact date will be notified later. The celebrations will take the form of a large picnic and sports gathering. Arrangements are in the hands of the members of the Town board and school committee. A number of district soldiers arrived home by the S.S. Tahiti last week including Gunners T. Blennerhassett, S. Stockdale, and Privates W. Strathern, C. G. Payze, J. McDonnell, S. Harding, Frank Rose and Les Corbett. The general voice of the soldiors was *’ that it’s decent to be back.” The visiting committee reported to the school committee on Monday that it had arranged to dispense cocoa to the scholars during the winter months at a charge per scholar of one penny per week. This has been made possible at the low cost through donations of cocoa by Mr J. Drapef! sugar by Mr S. Salisuury, and milk by farmers. Several donations of shrubs have been made to the Matamata School committee by Waikato nurserymen, for planting on Arbor day. At Monday’s meeting of the committee, the donors were thanked and members of the committee promised to assemble on July 24th as a working bee to beautify the school grounds. The headmaster was asked to assemble the senior scholars on the occasion.
