PUTARURU.

PEACE CELEBRATIONS. A meeting of tho Putaruru Peace Celebrations Committee was held at Putaruru on Friday night, Mr W. G. Howitt presiding. It was docidod to carry out tho programme on Peace Day arranged for Easter Monday, the programme including tug-of-war, chopping match,returned soldiers’ racos, married ladies race, sheaf tossing, and threading tho needle. A special committee was set up to arrange children’s games and races. A huge bon-fire and fireworks display to be followed by a social and dance was decided upon for the evening. Refreshments will be provided free at day and night functions. A Maori haka and poi dance will be performed during the burning of the botrfire. A novel event at the Peace sports will be a race of 75 yards in which returned soldiers, arm in arm with lady partners, will compete. A prize will be awarded tho oldest couplo attending the peace sports. A hearty invitation to tho children attending Matamata and other adjacent schools to attend the sports is extended by the Puta ruru committee. Entries in connection with the sports closo with Mr J. Rolfe 15 minutes before tho ovont. VALEDICTORY. A farewell social was tendered to Messrs R. Hemming and R. Thorpe, of the Putaruru railway Btation staff, who are leaving the service to enter commercial life, in the Putaruru hall on Friday. Mr J. Hutchison, acting stationmaster, apologised for the absence of the stationmaster. He said that Mr Hemming had been at the Putaruru station for five years and Mr Thorpe for two years. Both had proved themselves efficient and conscientious servants and had earnod the esteem and respect of the public by their courteous attention, and tho confidence of their superiors by their capablo service. Mr Hutchison said that during the time lie bad had charge of the station both gentlemen had given every satisfaction. He regrottod their departure from the service, and, in farewelling them, he expressed the good wishes of their fellow workers and the residents of Putaruru. Mr Hutchison handed each of the guests a suit case and an umbrella as a token of the estoem in which they had boon held by residents of Putaruru. He wished them evory success,

Hearty cheors wero given for Messrs Hemming and{ Thorpe, who in neatly phrased speeches, thanked Mr Hutchison and tho donors for their kindness to them. A dance followod tho presentation ceremony, and a pleasant period was spent.

A largo congregation attonded the thanksgiving service in the Putaruru Public hall on Sunday afternoon, when praise and thanks were offered to God for the victory He had brbught to the arms of tho Allies in their war against might and oppression. Mr W. G. Hewitt conducted the service.
