HUNGAHUNGA DRAINAGE BOARD.
April Meeting. Mr J. A. Clothier presided at tho usual monthly meeting of tho above hoard on Saturday. There were also present—Trustees W. Orawshaw, Jas Orr, F. E. Hughes and J. Pohlon.
A MATAMATA REQUEST. Messrs C. Wallace and C. F. Tyler, Matamata, asked that a branch drain be constructed from the main outlet through Mr Pohlen’s to tho corner of section 10.* They asked for a drain to correspond with tho present depth until the main drain is deepened, thus relieving their lands of surface water during the coming winter.
Tho engineer stated tho work was included in tho loan proposals. Mr Pohlon guaranteed to advance tho money for tho work until the loan money comes to hand. This would enable tho work to ho put in hand promptly. The board decided to accopt the offer. Tho distance is about 20 chains. Tenders will be called for the work. WAIWI-lERO DISTRICT. Messrs Frear, Bates and Corres waited on the board, intimating that at a meeting of the settlors affectod it was decided to urge the board to proceed with the raising of a loan of £3OOO to improve several drains on tho Waiwhero extension of the hoard’s district. The engineer mentioned that if the work in the upper reaches were put in hand, tho board may find it advisable to strike and collect its general rate earlier to clean out the lower reaches at the same time and thus obviate the danger of inflicting hardship on those settlers lower down by flooding their lands. Tho hoard decided to take the necessary steps to raise a loan as asked by the Waiwhere settlers. Mr Bates offered to interview tho settlers on the lower reaches, with a view to inducing them to do tho same as the settlors on tho upper reaches in guaranteeing the money to undertake the major scheme without delay. Mr J. Pohlen reported having satisfactorily adjusted a proportion of rateable property on behalf of Messrs Miles. —Approved. A WAHAROA DRAIN. Messrs Ogden and Pickup, Waharoa, waiting on the board asking that the drain from the Swamp road to tho railway line be cleared out, to obviate tho water from higher upstream coming over their lands. It was pointed out the work would have to be done out of general rates. About 80 chains of cleaning was required. Mr Pohlen explained that several other settlers affected were willing to contribute to the cost of cleaning out the drain in that locality. This was approved, and Mr Pohlen and the engineer wore given power to act, permission being given the settlers to clean out the drain at their own cost, to tho satisfaction of tho board’s engineer. Mr Orr commented that the settlors lower down-stream should assist tho settlors above by keeping their own part of the drains cleaned out. Mr Ogden also pointed out that the drain affecting Forsman’s and his properties was in bad order, and not giving tho results expected. The hoard’s engineer will inspect the locality. WORK AUTHORISED. The work authorised in McLaren’s and Brumby’s drain was left in the hands of Mr Hughes to let at the engineer’s estimate. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £260 were passed for payment.
