WORK IN MATAMATA COUNTY
Engineer’s Report. The onginoor, MrP. Shannon, submitted his report for tho month to date as follows:—• “ In the Matamata riding McKibbon has made good progress with his sanding contract ou tho Waharoa to Turnngn-o-moana road. I gave him instructions to put on oxtra sand on all tho weak placos on that road; I lmvo also widened four placos on the Walmroa swamp road to onablo carts to pass ; it will bo nocossary in view of tho coming incroaso in traffic to widon tho whole of tho swamp road as soon as funds aro available. Graveson is making good progress with the road giving access to Moore’s section, Murphy has completed his sanding contract in a satisfactory manner. Hutchison has completed grader work at Waharoa and is now working on tho Buckland road. O’Neill has boon ongngod in surfaco work and ropnirs during tho month. Prospecting for metal has boon carried out on Mr Blennerlmssott’s property. Tho doposit is only a small ono, approximately about 1600 to 2000 yards, but tho quality is good. After inspecting tho roads with Cr. Pohlon I called for tondors for sanding ono milo and 21 chains on tho Porin road, tenders to come boforo you to-day. In tho Putotoro riding Simpson and Jones lmvo made good progress with tlioir metalling contract, Tho Omahino stream bridgo in nearing completion. Considerable dolay has boon caused, owing to difficulty in getting timber. I hopo to bo able to let tho contract for tho approahos next week, in order that tho work can proceod as soon as tho bridgo is completed.
Tl'o Natives who obtained the con--tracts for sanding and gravelling at last meeting have only just arrived and stnrtod worli yesterday on tho rord to Putaruru. Thomson lias competed the grader work on Ilothoringtou’s road and is now proceeding with tho culvert and filling at tho foot of I Barringers hill. Tho metal ordorod for Tirnu has boon coming regularly * of Into and 250 cubic yards havo boon delivered at tho station. If this continues tenders can bo called for carting. Surface work, chiefly repairs to culverts and bridgos, has boon proceeding during tho month.
In tho Maungatautari riding Kolly is making fair progress with his metalling contract. Maliood has completed tho grader work, and also his gravelling contract. In the Taotnoroa riding Manhood has started his sanding contract on tho Tirau-Cambridgo road. Mullain has boon ongagod in surfaco work and is now spreading for tho contractor. In tho Putaruru riding Strong has boon proceeding with plough and scoop work at Putaruru. Strickland has been ongagod in quarrying stone for metal. Hendorson has completed tho grader work and culverts on tho Waotu roads, and has stated work on tho Ngatiri-Okohiriki road, but is short handed, and requires moro mou in order to push tho work while tho fino wonthor lasts. Several of tho bridgos in tho riding havo boon ropairod, in fact in two cases on tho Waotu road it almost amounts to two now’ bridgos. Bissott has boon delayed with his work at Tokoroa, owing to tho harvesting, but this is now completed, and ho is proceeding with his road work and will finish there in about a ivook. I then propose to start him at Slade-Oully’s. Tho stony hill i noar tho Waipa bridgo is in a very bad condition and requires repairs. ■ This I propose to carry out as soon as i I have a suitable man availablo for ■ that purpose.
