PUTARURU FARMER’S ENERGY
M mister's Remarks. When the Hon D. H. Guthrie visited Putaruru last week, he was escorted about a mile out to see a farm which was held to be typical of the district. The farmer met the Minist-r and was asked to relate his experiences and his treatment of the land. The settler was proud of his exoloit, and had every reason to he. He stated that ho had left Engl«nd with very little cash and no experience of farming. When he landed on the section he had three and sixpence in his pocket after paying carriage on his trunks. The land had been in fescue, bnt the ti-tree had got ahead and had pushed the grass out. The result of his hardship, and great energy was that he was now carrying 120 head of cattle, forty-six of which were milking cows, running on 160 acres, all of which was in grass. He illustrated his treatment of the land and stated that next year he intended milking sixty cows. He estimated that his returns for his year would be £IOOO. The Minister complimented the settler upon his perseverance and pluck and stated in effect that if the Government could be assured that all applicants for land would work like he had, a great part of the land settlement question would be easily settled.
