DEER POACHING.
Complainfs From Matamata. The fact that considerable deer poaching in and out of season is prevalent in the Matamata Acclimatisation Sub-Society’s district, which runs from Morrinsville to Cambridge, was emphasised by a letter received by the council of the Acclimatisation Society last Friday. The writer said that the poachers carried out their work undor the pretext of being pighunting. The president (Mr Whitney) said this was a disgraceful state of affairs. The deer were tho sambur deer, a very fine animal imported some years ago. They were quite as good as tho rod deer, but shorter in the leg. The sambur deer were being wiped out by promiscuous shooting of them, and they were fast disappearing. This particularly applied to the deer on one large private property, the trustee of which it was proposed to ask to close the property.
The council resolved to take certain action, and to request the representatives to declare their property closed, except to persons authorised by the president of the Matamata Society.
