WALTON.
For some considerable time the settlers of Walton have been looking for a progressive move locally in dairying matters, wishing'to keep in line with other districts. However, it would appear that there are two distinct camps, and that each have a different scheme. Those settlers at present supplying the N.Z. Dairy Association have decided on the erection of a cheese factory for which a site has been acquired and plans prepared. The Waikato Co-op. Dairy Co.'s suppliers have had under consideration the erection of a condensing station in connection with one of the Milk Food's, Ltd. dried milk factories. These dairymen seem to favor the idea, but now recognise that they will have to wait some considerable time for the machinery, and the erection of a central factory which can deal with the supply. On top of this all comes the amalgamation proposals which would seem to have held matters up indefinitely. Individually the settlers on either side generally do not favor the idea of amalgamation, believing in the old maxim that " competition is the life of trade." However, they are awaiting definite proposals before condemning the scheme totally. Thus matters at present are much "as you were." The amalgamation proposals are being awaited with considerable interest.
