HUNGAHUNGA DRAINAGE BOARD.

February Meeting. Mr T. E. Hughes presided at Saturday's meeting of the above board. There were also present Messrs J. Pohlen, W. Crawshaw and Jas. Orr. Mr J. A. Clothier was granted leave of absence. The balance-sheet for 1917-18 was received from the Audit Department. There were no " tags."—Approved. Mr H. Bairstow, of Waihou, attended and asked when the transfer of the Waiwhero drainage area from the Piako County to Hungahunga Drainage board would be completed. He was advised that the ratepayers' list would be placed before the Magistrate at Te Aroha on March 7th, after which matters could be put in train towards raising the loan necessary to effect the improvements desired. The action of the committee in instructing the engineer to take the levels through Mr Given's property was approved. When the engineer's report, re Waihekau creek stumps, was read, a member asked if Mr Laird had supplied a man to assist O'Brien as promised.—The clerk intimated that he had no knowledge on the point. The engineer, Mr W. R. Johnson, reported:—T. Nobilo has made good progress with his No. 5 drain contract. He has now eight men employed on the works, and the work will be completed before the next meeting. Given's objection.—The committee set up to inspect this locality did so, and after going over the whole of the ground it \»as decided that levels be taken along the boundary line between Messrs Given's properties with a view to finding whether there was sufficient fall to drain the raupo swamp into the Waihekau outlet, which, if found to exist, would relieve the board of the responsibility of carrying a drain up the centre of the lower property. These levels have now been ascertained, and plan is submitted which shows that there is sufficiency of fall to give a total depth at the raupj swamp of 6ft. by 6in. This is got by grading from the bottom of the present Waihekau drain. -As it is proposed to lower this drain bottom by a further 2ft good drainage will be secured along the route mentioned. " Chudleigh's middle Piraunui The committee visited this drain, and it was decided that levels should be taken with a view to ascertaining the extra depth requiring to be taken out to give sufficient depth for better drainage facilities. These have been taken, and the interested parties have now conferred with the •object of apportioning the cost estimated to be approximately £227 7sßd. The conference decided that the engineer visit the ground and make a classification on the lines laid down by the Land Drainage Act, 1908. This has now been done, and I will call the interested parties together immediately. Hughes' bridge.—Delay has been met with in the erection of this bridge owing to the short supply of timber. The matter will be dealt with as soon as the timber comes to hand. Waihekau creek stumps.— I have secured the services of Mr James O'Brien to undertake the work of blowing out the stumps in the Waihekau creek in Mr Laird's property. Mr Edwards' complaints.—Referring to the two letters written by Mr Edwards, of Waharoa, respecting certain drainage works, I have to point out that in the case of Forsman's outlet the work has been carried out in accordance with what was agreed upon at the board's meeting, it being then understood that the work would be completed as soon as the new loan was available. Messrs Forsman and Ogden fully understand the position. Referring to the second letter complaining of the spoil, I have to report that this particular part of the work has been completed as per specification of works.
