The body of Mrs Murray, wife of Mr J. D. Mu rray, of Walton, was found in the Wanganui river, on Sunday afternoon. The deceased wandered from Meredith House, Taumarunui, whilst suffering from the effects of influenza. In a letter to a friend in Ngaruawahia, Rifleman Thos. E. McMillan, at one time on the staff of the Morrinsville “Star,” states:—“l am writing this out of the wind on the side of one of old Hindenburg’s support lines to the trench system named after him. This “ Hindy ” trench is largely a newspaper myth, and most of it is not as good as our ordinary trenches, and certainly not impregnable at a single point. These are great, though terrible days, and an experience of a lifetime, if by the grace of Providence we get through.” The women of the country very narrowly missed securing the right to sit in Parliament. Had the empowering amendment been in order there is little doubt that it would have been passed as many of the members of both Houses are in full sympathy with the principle. There is every reason to believe that in a very' little while some of our women will be labelled “ M.P.” Objections to the innovation mostly spring from prejudice and cannot be resonably* maintained. Ever since the days when history was young women have been the real power back of many thrones, and most countries have a fairly long list of those who as uncrowned queens ' have guided the destinies of men. In more senses than one the hand that rocks the cradle does rule the world, and to extend the right to sit in Parliament is simply to grant the shadow to those who have long held the substance.
