A 'PHONE INCIDENT.
The 'phone has not altogether been a blessing for the past week. The exchange staff have been victims to the epidemic in common with other people. It has been quite customary to find that after ringing up a certain number one has not been cut off; or sometimes to find that some subbcriber persists in regarding you as " central." There is a certain business man who believeth that the soft answer turneth away wrath. Recently his 'phone persistently rung and when he took down the receiver it was to hear himself addressed as " central." In his suavest manner he denied the impeachment. " Ringing off" was futile. The other party was persistent and insistent in her demands (for it was a lady) for a certain number in Hamilton. About the fifth time he removed the receiver and placed it to his ear to hear the angry inquiry " Why won't you give me Hamilton?" Even a worm will turn. With a sigh he replied " Madam, I'm sorry I can't give you Hamilton." " Why not ?" came the prompt and angry response. " Because I do not own the title deeds" was the answer gently given. Then he hung up the receiver and sought refuge in a neighboring shop where the tedious reiteration of the tinkle of the bell would not break upon his ear.
