TIRAU.
The epidemic as experienced by Tirau is not in virulent form, only one serious case being reported. The principal store — that of Messrs Rose Bros Limit-, ed —has been thoroughly fumigated, and generally the public is taking all precautions, the chief of which is not congregating, but rather keeping to their homes as much as possible. Nominations for all events on the Tirau Racing club's programme close with the secretary, Mr E. W. Jordan, on December 9th. A liberal scale of prizemoney has been provided for and the meeting, which takes place on New Year's Day promises to be one of the best held by the old established club. Many residents will regret to learn of the death in Auckland, of Miss A. Gray, sister, of Messrs A. and J. Gray, of Tirau. The deceased lady was a prominent tennis player, being New Zealand's champion (singles and double) tor many years. She was well-known in Tirau, where she has often spent holidays with her brothers. She used also to visit Mrs M. Madill, at Matamata, and was only recently on a visit to both places in search of health. She had broken down in following her occupation as a nurse. After coming through nearly four years fighting untouched and then to be wounded four days before the armistice was signed is very bad luck. Such has been the fortune of Gunner C. Todd, son of Mrs J. C. Todd. He was severely wounded on November 7th necessitating the amputation of a leg. On November 4th his brother Corporal C. Todd was also slightly wounded.
