AT the last meeting of the Matamata Town board the question of opening subscription lists for the erection of a memorial, or monument for soldiers, was discussed. Although nothing definite was decided upon, the members were sympathetic, and the probability is that a scheme will he taken up. The idea in some quarters seems to be towards a memorial for soldiers who have fallen, while others deem that a monument, to contain the names of the men who have served, would be the better plan. We must' state at once that for various reasons the former appeals most strongly. From time to time during the great war depression has been cast on Matamata by the sad intelligence that one of its best beloved men had made the supreme sacrifice. Several of Matamata’s foremost men are numbered amongst the slain, and it is the memory of those which the residents wish to keep green. By inscribing their names on a memorial the young people will learn of those of their district who fought and gavb their lives for humanity. It is the duty of the public to see that they do learn. The men who went and returned will still be within* the community, and the knowledge of the great work they did will never fade. Their efforts, sacrifice, and devotion to duty will never be forgotten, but to inscribe the names of all presents many difficulties. It should, however, be a simple matter to secure the names of those men from the Matamata district who lie buried within the war zone. Let us honor those fallen heros, with a fitting memorial, which will live for a decade.
