Brief Mention of all Minor Happenings in Matamata and Vicinity.

At the Town board meeting on Monday, the chairman reported that the net proceeds from Brigadier Wouters' lecture amounted to £ll. This amount has been forwarded to the Belgian consul in Auckland. The premature war news on, Friday cost one man a new hat. Upon the news being posted at the post office he threw his hat in the air and then jumped on it. Unfortunately he had steel nails in his boots.

The Rev. R. W. Jackson left Matamata this week on a visit to Auckland and the South Island. The visit to the latter is in connection with the annual assembly at which Rev, Jackson will be one of the delegates for the Waikoto district. A protest against the official disseminating of incorrect war news by Government official was raised by the chairman of the town board on Monday. He said that it was cruel to parents who had sons at the war who consequent on the news coming through official sources placed complete reliance on it. The Matamata County council meeting which was to have been held on Friday last was postponed upon receipt of the war news, the members wishing to get back to their own districts. The meeting will be held on November 27th which is also the annual meeting. The matter of celebrating peace was discussed at the Town board meeting, and various suggestions were made. The idea of a picnic on the Recreation ground on the day after the news came through seemed to be most favored until the epidemic was mentioned, and then it was abandoned as a means of immediate rejoicing. The chairman said he would willingly raise a band of helpers for a peace celebration picnic in a week or a fortnight's time —after the epidemic had subsided. The members unanimously agreed to the suggestion. Bunch keys lost. Two sections on Tower road for sale. A soldier's badge is advertised as lost. Monthly meeting of the Farmers' Union to-morrow (Friday) night. Road foreman required by the Matamata Town board. Tenders called by the Town board for supply of man, horse and dray are required. The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering company announce impossibility to render statements of accounts to end of October.
