In a letter to hia brother Mr K. Johnstone, of Morrinsville, Private J. Johnstone writes: " Henry Ford seems to be a wonder as an organiser of work, some say he is the greatest individual enemy (among civilians) Germany has, which is saying a great deal. The number of cars he has supplied to the Allies is fabulous, but that is only one in a whole catalogue of achievements. His light agricultural tractors have been a great factor in the really wonderful development of food production here; he, besides making all other parts in great quantities, makes all the cylinders for the new American "Liberty" motors, for which he has cut down the cost to almost a third of the former price. Of these he is turning out 100,000 a month. A man contracted to supply steel helmets at 15d and found it impossible to produce them at that price. Ford took over bis contract and is supplying them at 4|d turning out 50,000 per day; he is building U boat destroyers and in a short time one of these will be launched every day. Lastly he is making "Baby" tanks which are shortly to swarm in the battlefields like ants. It is said he is immensely popular with the workers as he pays the highest wages in the world. Certainly Germany made a ruinous blunder when she made implacable enemies of such men by her piratical methods,as she is finding to her cost.
