The Only Paper published in the Mataniata County Published every Thursday ..\- ■ ■ — ■ Office Tower Road P.O. Box 38 'Phone 82

Messrs J. F. Vosper and Boagey, are at present indisposed through influenza in a mild form. Captain Allen will give an Elocutionary recital in aid of the Church Army Huts in France in the town hall on Tuesday next. Gn Monday night last Mr A. Radford was gore" by a bull in the paddock on Mr Crowther's farm. Fortunately the animal was minus its horns, but nevertheless it inflicted nasty bruises. The sufferer is still confined to his bed. This year's Waikato Show, to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday next, promises to be equal, if not be better, than any yet held. There are 22 entries in the class for Dominion hunter. All jump-' ing classes have filled well, so that competition will be keenThere was general rejoicing in Matamata on Monday, when t e news of Austria's surrender was received. All business places closed for the rest of the day, and the school-children were 'also given a half day's holiday. In the evening parties paraded the streets with tooters, tin-whistles, mouth organs etc. Taking fright at a train entering the Matamata station, a pair of horses attached to a waggon, belonging to Mr Orr, bolted on Tuesday. Luckily they had a clear passage from the station to near Mr Price's shop where they were stopped. The only damage sustained was that the seat was smashed, and a milk-can badly dented. Mrs M. Kennington, of " Hinemoa House," Te Aroha, (late of Turanga-o-moana) has received official advice that a military medal has b6en won by her late son, Private James S. Butterworth. The award was made for gallantry in the field. The late Private Butterworth was only 23 years of age, and enlisted over two years ago from the King Country. He was a great favorite with those who knew him, and his soldier mates write fine eulogies of his conduct on active service. The Military Medal fittingly marks his career, and the regret is that he did not live to wear his well-won honor. However, his relatives will have the satisfaction of knowing he was a gallant soldier. Fresh delicacies at Walton's. Finnerty and Darby offer a property for sale. A relief train will leave Putaruru for Franktonat 7.30 a.m. on Wednesday next, returning from Claudelands at 4.35 p.m. A clearing sale of Mr G. H. Kuhtz's live and dead stock will be conducted by the N.Z. Loan- and Mercantile Agency Ltd., at Hinuera on Monday, November 18th. The stock includes 35 good dairy cows in full milk or at profit. There is every possibility of Father Christmas having to pay j . several visits to his Matamata de- j pot (H. W. Smales) this year. He j has stocked up heavily with new, pretty and seviceable presents which are attracting much attention. The bazaar is worth a visit with the children.
