The bi-monthly sitting of the Matamata Magistrate’s Court will be held to-morrow (Friday). At a meeting of Hinuera ratepayers last week it was unanimously decided to support the county chairman’s Patetere roads metalling scheme. Corp. W. F. Mahoney, D.C.M., of Paeroa, who recently returned from active service, was on a visit to his sister, Mrs W. ?A. Cordon, of Matamata, last week. Private Raymond Blennerhassett, who had been home to Matamata on final leave, returned to camp on Monday. He was farewelled at the station by a number of friends. Among the names in one of the latest casualty lists are included Private S. Butterworth (next of kin Mrs J. Kennington, late of Turanga-o-moana) killed in action and Private J. Duxfield, of Matamata, wounded.
The Rev. T. H. C. Partridge, who for the past two years has been curate of the Matamata cum Morrinsville Anglican parish, has received notice of his appointment to the Ohura (King Country) district. The Rev. Partridge takes over his duties at the latter place at the end of the present year.
In “ Hello Everybody,” a revue to be staged in Australia on Monday for the first time, the caste includes Jack Quinlan, son of Mr P. Quinlan, of Matamata'. We understand that ‘‘Jack’’has a contract of some years’ duration with the. Williamson company who will produce the revue.
Brigadier Wouters, of the Belgian army, will deliver a descriptive address in the Matamata town hall to-night on the fighting of the Belgian army from Liege to Dixmude, and the horrors of the German invasion. The address is in aid of the Belgian Relief fund, and under the auspices of the Town board.
A correspondent writes complaining of the noise created by a section of the patrons at the Town hall on Saturday. We understand that a warning has been issued by the committee, which may have the desired effect and allow the other patrons to enjoy the pictures as they would wish. Failing that we are informed other steps will be taken. The sum of £250 has been forwarded to the financial organiser of the Red Cross appeal, by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, allotted as follows: — Twenty-five pounds each to the Matamata, Ohinemuri, Thames, Raglan, Waitomo and Taumarunui counties, thirty-five pounds each to Waikato and Piako, and fifteen each to Whakatane and Tauranga.
At the meeting of the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ union on Friday the chairman took exception to the remarks njade by a member of a trustee board at a meeting of the Military Service board at Te Awamutu recently, regarding the employment of Hindoos in preference to returned soldiers, and that the farmers were not playing the game. Mr Rollett said regarding the Matamata district and the country generally the farmers had played the game. If Hindoos were working it was because white labor was practically unprocurable. There were not many farmers who would care to ask a man who had come back wounded or sick to get into a drain for him. If the statement was allowed to go uncontradicted it would create a false impression in the cities —a position that all were anxious to avoid. The members unanimously agreed with the chairman’s remarks.
