What fools tho German people must bo, and, what is more distressing, what fools they must think the rest of us ! And yet they believe —they “do” believe; they have “got”' to believe; don’t their newspapers tell them so!—that it was wo and not Germany that began the war. And so, naturally they think —which is not complimentary to our intelligence—that we know the fact to bo as Germany declares it. But what hollow nonsense. Hero is the test: —When war broke out all Germany oxaltod. Well, did they not? AVas it not precisely what they had all been preparing for, all been looking forward to, for years. Why they know it was. And wo know it was. And shall any of ns others ever, over forget the awful dismay, the dread, the heartsinking, with which, on that terrible ■lth August, four years ago, the news smote us. AVhv, it is Solomon’s judgment between the two women, over again. AVhich nation caused the war : tho one that rejoiced at, extolled it, and acclaimed it, or the ono that was cast by it into tho very depths, into very anguish of the soul ?—From an exchange.
