r The Red Cross Society held ' their meeting in the Town hall 1 on Thursday last when a large number of ladies gathered, and a 1 very pleasant afternoon was » spent. Mesdames Boagey and } Johnson provided afternoon tea, 1 which as usual, was much ap--3 predated. During the afternoon motions of sympathy were passed to the Beeson family and to Mrs Mallett. The news that Mr Basil Beeson had been killed in action in France came as a shock to the residents of Matamata. Re was so well known and so thoroughly > respected and honored for his ■ high principles and sterling - qualities. He leaves a gap it will ■ be hard to fill. | The box packed at the close of J the meeting contained the following : —2O pyjama suits, 1 pair pyjama pants, 23 shirts, 5 flannel . bed jackets, 2 knitted mufflers, 1 I balaclava. 18 pillowslips, 24 handI kerchiefs, 4 pair socks, 12 treai sure bags, 2 many-tailed bandages, 1 bundle old linen, ravel lings. Included from Turanga-o-moana, 8 pyjama suits, ; 2 knitted mufflers, 12 shirts.
