The Matamata Record

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1918 TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

Tke Only Paper published in the Matamata County Publiahed every Thursday Office Tower Road P.O. Box 38 Thoke 82

A FEW WEEKS agothe Education beard publicly advertised the curriculum of the Matamata Technical school and also issued circulars drawing attention to it. The advantages offered were so manifest that it was not doubted but wjiat the classes would rapidly fill. It is surprising therefore, to learn that in one class at least the response of residents has not been great enough even to allow a commencement being made. We refer to the First Aid class, for which capable instructors and doctor had been arranged for. The" benefit to the individual and the cammnnity of a knowledge of first aid is so great that it would appear by the class not filling that the public scarcely understood what was offering. First aid really is only common sense, with a knowledge of physiology, but the latter is essential. To mothers of children, in a district like Matamata particularly, a knowledge of physiology would be very useful, and it is to them that the class especially should appeal. The fee charged by the board will scarcely pay for the doctor's lecture, so that it is not on account of high fees that the response has not been up to expectations. It is hoped that th» apathy is but immediate, and that the enrolment of more names will be but a matter of days. When the Technical school pro- % ject was first mooted, there ap- * peared to be a pronounced demand, and the department acceded to the request for its erection. It is now the duty of the residents of Matamata and district to see that the advantages on offer are availed of. On this occasion we would especially appeal for the first aid class.
