HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
When a sponge is slimy, steep it in vinegar and water for twelve hours. Milk will not boil over if the saucepan is buttered on the upper part and edge. White paint is best cleaned with a cloth squeezed out in hot water and dipped in a little bran. The grated rind of a lemon or an orange added to the rake, not only gives it an agreeable flavour, but prevents it from becoming stale too quickly. Paraffin oil greatly assists in the cleaning of linen and calico garments. It should be added in the proportion of two tablcspoonsful of pr.rafiin to ten gallons of boiling water. If when fi.vi:-..; li-.li of any kind a little salt is sprinkled on the bottom of the pan when it is lot, the fish can be easily turned without breaking in the least. When baling i\"7* for salad, drop them in cold r.v.tor immediately they are removed from th? saucepan. Tlr.s prevents the cterk mark appoaring round the yolk. Dissolve a lump of soda in a little hot water and r.dd it to the blue water. This prevents the blue from settling in the clothes, and makes them beautifully white. A baby's bottle ought never to be washed with soap, but the moment it is empty it should be washed in cold water, then filled with a weak solution of boric acid. Borax makes an excellent wash for the hair, a tcaspoonful to a basin of water being a good proportion. A solution of it is also good a?, a mouth wash. A dry powder may be used as a dentifrice.
