WAHAROA.
A baby show was held in the hall last Thursday, afternoon which, with the dance in the evening, added about £SO to the Queen Carnival fund. This was considered,.an excellent result, and the carnival committee are to be congratulated on the really pleasant afternoon’s entertainment. At intervals about six items were rendered by the school children - under , the. direction of Mrs Wade, assisted by Miss Mabel Maxwell. ‘ These were much appreciated by those present, a floral dance by ten dainty little maidens receiving a double endore. 4 Several Matamata performers also came.to assist in the good cause. The solo and recitation, «given by Master Ball and Miss Betty Ball respectively, were very pleasing numbers, as were also the Maori dances by the clever little Misses Heap. Miss Joyce Noakes, a small maiden of eight, sang “ Please give me a Penny, Sir,” thereby adding 13s to the day’s takings. Of the babieg present Miss Gwen Thompson, the little two-year-old daughter of Mrs JamesThompson, was first favorite, with Master Douglas Tong a good second, and Master Garry Ryan third. Bran tubs and produce stalls . attracted old and young, and afternoon tea was served by the lady members of the committee. Mesdames Tong, Ryan, Scott and McMillan, Misses McGill, McMillan and Scott, and Messrs Weeks and Whitworth gave valuable assistance during the afternoon. The hall r was beautifully decorated by Mr A. K. Weeks- with- handsome nikau palms, flags and pale pink camellias. In the evening a dance was held to the fine music of Darby’s orchestra. Mr A. G. Yardley, wli© is always delightful in his rendering of songs of a romantic type, was listened to with the usual attention and pleasure in “Roses of Picardy,” and.an encore number. During the evening Mr Philips sold the remainder of the goods left over from the afternoon. ; f: - s * The Paddy’s market held by th© Waharoa school children on August 24th realised the sum of £ls 11s 3d which, together with £3 7s daily, collections, makes a school contribution of 18 guineas towards the Carnival fund.
