WAHAROA.

One of the prettiest and most successful balls of the carnival was that held at Waharoa last Thursday evening, in support of the Pink Queen. When the grand march and waltz was announced at-8.30 about 40 couples were on the floor, of whom the majority were in fancy .costume. The latter were of beautiful variety and included several most orginal dresses. The floor was in perfect condition for dancing and remained so throughout the long evening. The music played by Mr and Mrs Darby and Mr J. Gumming, with assistance from Mrs W. Ryan was greatly appreciated as usual. The musicians' fees were handed back to the funds. During the evening a guessing competition for a lovely iced cake was held, Mr J. Ryan being tiie winner. Upon it being handed back for auction it was sold repeatedly by Mr G. Phillips, bringing in all £l3 16s. The cake was donated by Mrs Faville, Hamilton. Extra dances were kindly played by Misses Ross, Little and M. Robinson. The voting on the costumes was particularly heavy and provided some close contests. The winners were: —Prettiest costume, Miss H. McMillan 1, Miss Elliott 2; most complete costume, Mrs Wade 1, Miss Green 2 ; most original costume Miss Lake 1, Mrs Caundle 2. The gentlemen's prizes were won by Mr Rentoul and Mr Caundle. The M.C's. Messrs Sherson and R. Scott fulfilled their duties in a most excellent manner and are deserving of encomiums in that respect. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies.
